Sexuality
We know that sexuality can take many forms. So, we honor all the unique ways an individual can express their sexuality. We also know that some have experienced major and undue hardships due to their sexuality from their family and community.
Our goal is to support your identity, wherever you may be on your journey. You may be newly questioning your sexuality or thinking about coming out to some of the people in your life. Or, you may be out and want support around past experiences or current relationships.
Wherever you are on your journey, we are here to help.
GENDER vs. SEXUALITY vs. ROMANTIC ORIENTATION
Gender, sexuality, and romantic orientation are all different aspects of a person's selfhood. Sexuality defines whom a person does or does not feel sexual attraction towards. Romantic attraction or orientation defines whom a person wants to have a romantic relationship with. Sexual and romantic attraction are not the same thing, though they can often occur at the same time. A person's gender is their internal and individual experience of gender. This may or may not correspond with the identity they were assigned at birth. And, it has nothing to do with who they are or aren't attracted to. It is a person’s sense of being a woman, a man, both, neither, or anywhere along the gender spectrum.
Gender
At Grit Therapy, we are so glad that many people can now acknowledge that gender can be experienced in many different ways. We're committed to supporting people of all genders.
But, we know that some people experience persecution due to their gender. We also know that many people need and deserve support around gender identity as they work to define their true selves in a very binary culture.

Wherever you are on the gender spectrum, we are here to support and honor you.
Intersex Individuals

Intersex is a term used to describe individuals who are born with a variety of reproductive and sexual anatomy that doesn't fit the "female" or "male" categories. This can happen in a variety of ways and is not medically problematic. It is quite common and estimates suggest that 1-2 out of every 100 people is born intersex.
Some intersex people are assigned a sex at birth that doesn't necessarily coincide with the gender they experience as they grow older. If you or someone you love is intersex and would like more support on your journey, reach out to us today for a free consult!
Supporting Children and Teens
Identifying your sexuality or gender can happen at any age. At times, children or teens confront resistance, fear, bullying, inequity, and/or trauma related to their gender or sexuality. Unfortunately, we know that there are higher rates of mental health concerns and suicidality among LGBTQIA+ youth than their peers. We are committed to supporting the children and teens in our community on their journey.

Support for Teens

If you are a teen who is 12 or older, you can reach out for mental health support without a parent's consent. Having the support of a parent or caretaker is ideal. But, we understand that some teens are not supported by their caretakers. Reach out on your own today to learn more about our options to get your therapy covered. Your sessions and information are completely confidential.

Support for parents

We understand that some parents have a hard time with their child's sexuality and gender. In a non-judgemental setting, we can help you better understand your child's experience and needs. Together, we can work through your own biases and misconceptions, process your grief and loss, and find compassionate ways to support your child.

If you or your LGBTQIA+ child are looking for more support, contact us today for a free consult call.

When and how a person comes out with their queer identity is very personal and ideally, at the time and pace of their own choosing.
Are you are thinking about coming out and want support from an experienced therapist with lived experience? If so, you have come to the right place!
If you were unfairly outed or experienced trauma or disappointment after coming out, we see you, and we can help.

Being Queer in a Mountain Community
We wish that every community honored and appreciated its queer members. But, we know that is not always the case. Some communities are more open and inclusive than others. Being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community in a rural mountain town can pose some challenges such as:
-
Lack of resources
-
Bias and oppression
-
Lack of community
-
Lack of community education around LGBTQIA+ related issues
-
The difficulty for LGBTQIA+ children and teens
-
Hyperfocus on traditional gender expressions
However, you are not alone!
